Ooh.

Interesting.
Putting them here partly for your thoughts, but also so I can collect them :)

This one's for you:
http://www.naturalstrength.com/research/detail.asp?ArticleID=203
Particularly: "Research performed by Brooks and Gaesser (5) as well as Bahr and Sejersted (6) confirm that the higher the exercise intensity, proportionately more fat will be burned during the recovery phase."
Interesting. It does, however, agree that less fat is burned *during* the exercise ("Strength training exercise tends to burn/utilize carbohydrate during the actual training session. ")

refs:
5) Brooks G, Gaesser GA. End points of lactate and glucose metabolism after exhausting exercise. Journal of Applied Physiology 49: 1057, 1980.
6) Bahr, Sejersted. Metabolism 40: 836, 1991.

And I assume J.A.P. is a serious peer-reviewed journal :)

But that's weight training specifically, rather than the running you mention, which is very interesting.
