Now's the time of year when Swing Patrol does its yearly "reset" and starts up afresh with new venues and new teachers and new stuff. This year, they launch in the UK, and they've also started some stuff in Tassie. They've been in Sidonee for a quite some time now. If you're in Canberra, go with Jumptown Swing.

Swing Dancing is pretty awesome fun, and Swing Patrol in particular make it easy to fit into a busy modern schedule. Pretty much every single venue always runs a "Level 1 " class every week, and every "Level 1" class presumes no prior knowledge, so you can casually attend. No worries about having to sign up for a whole course, just turn up and see how you go. "Level 2" classes have a prerequisite of having done the "lindy-hop basic", and most venues do a short (3-4 week) sequence of that every so often. A lot of those start up soon. And no, you don't usually need a partner to go with - the whole point of swing dancing is the ability to dance with random different people, so changing partners during class is a constant thing.

If you're in need of some fun exercise that actually engages your brain, then I really recommend swing dancing. I find that it's one of those things where it's easy to learn and have fun doing it, but still takes a lifetime to master, so you won't be bored. This is true of most interesting things, I think.
