The copyright situation is usually that you retain copyright, but grant the service provider a fairly unlimited license to use your material. Some are better than others at clarifying that that is for the purpose of providing the service, but the advertising based outfits, well, yeah, mostly they allow themselves to do everything they can where not actually prevented by consumer legislation. And even then, it can be pretty dicey - e.g. Google still (as far as I am aware - if someone knows otherwise please let me know) having copies of all that war-driving collected wifi data, despite being ordered to destroy it by several governments.
