Respect for the dead

The Prime Minister, John Howard, has written a personal letter apologising to the widow of Australia's only casualty in Afghanistan, SAS soldier Andrew Russell, after he neglected to invite her to a wreath-laying by US President George Bush in her husband's honour.

Failing to invite the widow to the funeral, huh? Shows a lot of respect, that does. Somehow, I fail to believe that Little Johnny and Little George have any real respect for the soldiers and people that they have caused the deaths of. This just confirms it. If you care at all, you damn well invite the widow.

Like many politicians I suspect that Howard and Bush are only interested in public opinion and the only reason why the apology was written was for that very reason.

Remember John Elliot and his drink-driving problem?

after he neglected to invite her to a wreath-laying by US President George Bush in her husband's honour.

A detail, to be found in Margo Kingston's article: while Bush told Parliament he was going to lay the wreath, he didn't actually do so. Instead he palmed that job off on a couple of his staff.
