If you're a heavy RHPS (Rocky Horror Picture Show) fan (familiar with at least the original songs, and ideally know the script too), and you've seen Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, then you will find The Black Pearl Picture Show by circe_tigana absolutely and totally hilarious.

LiveJournal Fu

Just a few LiveJournal features that people might or might not be fully aware about:

• LiveJournal Portal - a quite configurable way to get to most of the LJ bits you use regularly)
• LiveJournal Security FAQ - If you post a public entry, it's public. That means the entire world can search for it and read it. This can and does have real world consequences. If you need to exercise a bit more control over the information, do use posting security.
• news - Infrequent, basic, overall LiveJournal news.
• lj_maintenance - LiveJournal Server status and planned downtime announcements.
• http://status.livejournal.com/ - URL to check (it's on an entirely different server and stuff to the rest of LJ) if you can't get to LiveJournal at all.
• How do I use an lj-cut? What are the other LiveJournal specific tags?
• LiveJournal Clients - if you're using your own PC to post from, you may wish to check these out for functionality and convenience.

LJ Communities

• aus_gamers - for Australian Roleplayers.
• aicsachat - for members of any Australian Intervarsity Choral Societies Association choir members.
• fetishphotos - Fetish Photography (not work safe!)

Thanks for this post, I think people do need to be reminded every now and then about certain LJ things - new users often don't have a clue about alot of this stuff!

Especially security. I am getting real tired of horridly libelous and slanderous posts that are totally public made by people [mostly babybats, but not always] who seem to think just because it's their LJ it's somehow sacrosanct and they can say whatever the hell they want on it, with no thought to the legal implications of it being in fact a published medium. I honestly don't know what the legal status of slander on friends-only post would be, but if you can sue someone for a slanderous email, surely it's not much better, but at least it shows a modicum of restraint.

It's kinda redundant but there's also a status journal you can add to your friends list which logs posts made to http://status.livejournal.com/ which isn't much help if LJ is down but can be useful to note maintenance and some status issues.

Legal status as regards defamation for a friends only post is probably a grey area. I think it boils down to what the actual/expected audience for the post was, and whether the post could be deemed to affect the reputation of the defamed individual in a material fashion given the audience.

I'd written a long reply here, but have decided to make it a full post entitled Online Defamation, a potted summary instead.

I'm not a lawyer either but I am a journalist who has to deal with defamation stuff all the time and I've added some thoughts to Thorf's very long post about defamation that might apply to friends-only posts. HTH.

Thanks Thorfinn for one of the most useful posts I've seen on my friends page! A lot of your posts are a bit incomprehensible to me, as I'm not anywhere near as computer literate as I would like to be, but then you come out with gems like this that remind me of why you are a permanent fixture on my friends list, apart from the fact that you are the sweet person who gave me a code that enabled me to get here to start with. I do generally try to write for a reasonably broad audience, although sometimes I'll write stuff that requires some genre knowledge, like having played some computer games, or been a convention roleplayer, etc. If something I write seems to be not understandable, feel free to ask for more detail or background, if it seems like something you'd be interested in.

Oh, and no worries about the code. Always happy to help out friends of friends.
