Gaming: Conquest 2004

As usual for Easter, I went to Conquest. Despite it being a quiet con (primarily due to the lack of a Con booklet at Arcanacon in January and other issues, but others have ranted about that already), I had fun.

I spent most of the convention GMing this game:

Rememberance
Organised by Shaun Clarke
System:SLA Industries
Sessions:1
Players:3
Seriousness:4-5
Characterisation:5
Rules Knowledge:1-2
Adult Content:MA (15+)

One closed the door of the limo and told the driver to push through the throng of adoring fans and on to the next dance with death.

Another primed the MAL Assault Cannon and stepped into the doorway.

But he awoke as he had done time before - clutching at his chest and running his fingers through sweat soaked hair- The nightmare was getting clearer.

Three are drawn together to reenact history, as a dead serial killer finishes what he started.

It did have a tendency to run slightly overtime - I would love to have had about 4 hours... That's the time the game would run to at its natural pace with the average three-group of Con roleplayers. It was well shaped enough though, that it was entirely possible to squish the game into 2.5 hours without too much trouble. I had fun - it was kinda nice to get back to GMing someone else's work. Much less pressure than writing. Anyway, I shall say no more about the game here, since I know there are people who wish to play it outside the con...

I played two games by Pointless Mental Cruelty (the Adelaide Bunch - Mark Philp, Daniel Rehorek and Co.). The second of these was a four to five player Hong Kong Action Theatre style game, called Saving Grace. Very well put together, and I had lots of fun with Alex Loke, Laura Birch, [livejournal.com profile] seedy_girl and myself as players, and Mark Philp as the GM, with help from another of the Adelaide fellows whose name I cannot recall.

The first Pointless Mental Cruelty game was Saigon in Flames, a 9-12 player freeform/multiform set in 1975 Vietnam. Despite our session running with only 6 players, it worked anyway... It would've worked a whole lot better with the full 12 players, but it was still fun anyway.

Also played Take the Force of the Blow, by Damien Moore and Liz Drake, a two session Call of Cthulhu scenario set in Victoria in the early 1920s for four serving members of the Victoria Police Force. I enjoyed it, and our team ([livejournal.com profile] elindal, [livejournal.com profile] fraerie, [livejournal.com profile] seedy_girl and thorfinnmyself) got a special mention for not escaping from scene one until 45 minutes before the end...

Also played [livejournal.com profile] teknohippi's 7th Sea freeform, A Princess's Pleasure. Played a priest, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I really like the 7th Sea system, and will have to investigate it further.

Anyway, in summary, I had a good con, had most mornings and evenings off, and enjoyed the games I GMed and played. I think the important thing to remember about cons is that they're volunteer events, and as such, you really do tend to get back what you put in. If you think the con wasn't run well, or had problems, do something about it. Send them feedback email. Nicely! Don't just rant and rave, say why you thought something was bad, and offer suggestions of how you think it could be better. Or volunteer yourself to help.

[livejournal.com profile] seedy_girl and myself now have tickets available. Concession is $15 and Full Price is $25. Comment here or send email to either of us to get tickets. They will be a lot more expensive via ticketek, and may or may not be available at all on the night.

Chatting: IM Me, Baby!

Anyone who's stalking thorfinnmy userinfo page will notice that a whole bunch of IM contact details have appeared. Yahoo!, M$N Messenger, AOL IM, ICQ, Jabber, all five are there. This is because Gaim is my friend, and lets me log onto all of them simultaneously. Occasionally I also exist on IRC, #bdsm on EFnet and #gothic on OzNet, either as thorfinn or thorfy.

GAIM?

Re: GAIM: were you a Trillian user before switching, if so, why do you think it's better? Doesn't seem to support as much as Trillian does, so I'm curious if you've used both... I've been a diehard Trillian user for the last couple years now, and seems GAIM doesn't do as much....?
