Whee. Well, I decided to pay for a LiveJournal. This means several things:

• I now have several livejournal creation codes to give out,


• thorfinn@livejournal.com now works,


• http://thorfinn.livejournal.com/ now works,


• I just spent a couple of hours frobbing styles and colours,


• I uploaded another user pic, and probably will go looking for more,


• Friends can SMS me,


• I'm US$25 poorer.

Oooh! I'm so itching to try this and see how it works, but it's 2am on Tuesday so I doubt you'll appreciate it. I'll behave. So how does it get billed? Does the receiver have to pay or does it somehow get added to the sender's phone bill?
Aint technology just grand.

And I just learnt a new word :) Frobnicate.

It uses whatever "email to SMS" gatewaying method you have set up... Some providers have this, and a quite good third-party provider of email-to-SMS is blueskyfrog.com. So, receiver pays. :) Which is why I set it up restricted to Friends access only... As for frobnicate, ain't it a good word? So necessary.

Thought it may have been like that. My friends and I all happily typed away with BlueSkyFrog when it first came out, till we found out that receiver pays :(

I didn't. :) I paid for community-space - a far different thing. Webspace, I have my own, absolutely, and wouldn't be paying for it elsewhere.

So how does one set up the SMS thingie? Because I've had a certain deal of irritation with the fact that my gleeful harassing ways can only go in the one direction...

Basically you set up an email-to-SMS gateway of some kind, then go over to Your Settings->Personal Info, tick "Enable text messaging...", set Security Level to whatever, select Other in Service Provider, type in the full email address used by your email-to-SMS gateway... voila.

This is all described in LJ FAQ Item 30...

Personally, I'm using Blueskyfrog rather than anything my phone provider gives... they're a fair bit cheaper.

Yeah, I got that far, and after wombling around the Optus website realised I wouldn't necessarily be able to do anything with it... but I wasn't sure how to with BlueSkyFrog, either.

BlueSkyFrog has a great service called "MEmail" - Mobile email which means you can use any email
program (such as Hotmail, Yahoo, Outlook Express or any others) to send a message to a mobile phone. 

First of all you must select PLAIN TEXT, not HTML which most emails are sent in. Depending on your
email program, you can usually change the mail format in the TOOLS, OPTIONS, MAIL FORMAT section. 

In the To: field enter your friends mobile number followed by @blueskyfrog.com 
It should look like this 

To: 040000000@blueskyfrog.com 

You may enter a subject, and type a message of upto 141 characters. 
Hitting send will deliver the message to the mobile phone.

So, basically, you acquire a blueskyfrog account, put that in, and it's all good. You probably do want to pay for some Bugz (blueskyfrog's currency), because SMS via that address are charged at one Bugz each... Anyway, I just sent you the recommend-a-friend thing from blueskyfrog, so hopefully that should give you enough info to sign up.

My only stumbling block now is the whole 'plain text' thing - for the life of me, I can't find where to make that an option. Dang.

Uhh... you don't need it for SMS from Livejournal (LJ does the Web->email thang, blueskyfrog does the email->SMS thang).

How did you set it up for SMS? I tried that when I moved to Amsterdam, but I didn't see support for the client. People used to send me text messages quite a lot when I was in the U.S. and I miss getting them...

As I rambled in comments to Julian... I use blueskyfrog to handle the email->SMS part, and Livejournal handles the Web->email part... Basically, if you have an email->SMS gateway, then the Livejournal bit handles the Web->email part for you.
